A few months ago I reviewed the Ultracast four-bladed Typhoon propeller set. At the time, I mused that it would be nice if they also produced Tempest tailplanes for an accurate late-war Typhoon. Most of the four-bladed Tiffies were also equipped with the bigger horizontal tailplane.

I am delighted to report that Ultracast has now released a set of 1/48 scale Hawker Tempest tailplanes for Hasegawa’s tear-drop canopy Typhoon.

The tail surfaces are beautifully cast. The horizontal tail requires almost no cleanup at all - they are free of any casting block. Rather cleverly, the thicker Tempest part simply slips over the Typhoon kit tailplane root. This should ensure a very solid bond with the empennage.

They also feature separate elevators. The hinge joins on the main tail parts are recessed, and the leading edge of the elevators are rounded off, to permit authentic positioning of the flying surfaces.

The Tempest tailplanes will be essential for anyone building an authentic late-war, four-bladed Typhoon.

Highly Recommended.

Thanks to Kevin at Ultracast for the review samples.
